Daikin confirms the effectiveness of its patented streamer technology, which successfully inactivates more than 99,97% of Novel Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) after irradiating the virus for 3 hours.
The study has been conducted by Daikin Industries Ltd in cooperation with Professor Shigeru Kyuwa from the Department of Biomedical Science of the University of Tokyo, and a group of research led by Professor Shigeru Morikawa from the Department of Microbiology of the Okayama University of Science. Streamer technology, developed by Daikin in 2004, performs an oxidative decomposition of harmful substances. The Streamer discharge is a type of plasma discharge featuring an innovative air purification technology that stably generates high-speed electrons.
“Streamer Discharge” is a type of plasma discharge in which high-speed electrons collide with oxygen and nitrogen molecules, which then become activated and capable of oxidative decomposition of bacteria. This type of discharge has the ability to eliminate bacteria and mould as well as hazardous chemical substances and allergens, etc. Compared to standard plasma discharge (glow discharge), the discharge range of Daikin’s Streamer Discharge is wider, which makes it easier for electrons to collide with the oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the air.
This enables activated molecules to be generated three dimensionally over a wide area, which results in an oxidative decomposition speed that is over 1,000 times greater with the same electrical power. Daikin’s Streamer Discharge technology has proven successful in stably generating high-speed electrons, a feat that has been considered difficult up to now.
Its oxidative decomposition capability is much higher than the conventional plasma discharge (glow discharge). Moreover, when combined with air components, these high-speed electrons have a capability for powerful oxidative decomposition that continuously remove odours, bacteria and indoor air pollutants such as formaldehyde.
